On the box

It's no surprise that Christmas is my favourite time of the year.

Great food, great spirit, great excuse for celebrations.

And as soon as the Adelaide Christmas Pageant has been and gone, I'm ready to kick off the shenanigans (even in Melbourne!).

Christmas marketing campaigns always grab my attention and two of my faves so far are below. They're both heavyweights in the retail world (UK and Australia) but do these ads speak to you?

John Lewis

David Jones

Yes, they do to me.

The best ragu. Ever.

It's times like these that I remember why I started ye olde blog.

It was to share my favourite recipes with my friends and family.

Well, I'm quietly confident that this is perhaps the best recipe I've ever shared.

You know how when you buy a new brand of car, that's all you ever see on the streets from then on? Or when you hear a new song you like (or hate) and then it's playing on the radio every time you turn on your car? Well, that happened to me with a recipe last week.

A girl from work and I were talking cooking and she told me about this sausage ragu that she loves. The only sausage ragu I know is the terrible one we get served up at school with the sausages still in their skin, disguised in some weird coloured curry sauce. I smiled politely but deleted her email as soon as she sent the link through to the recipe.

Then later that week, my friend Shuggie told me about this amazing ragu she makes with pork and fennel sausages. Now, Shuggie would never lie to me when it comes to food, so this time I sat up and took notice. Sure enough, it was the same Karen Martini recipe and it's such a winner in her family, that her Dad now uses it as their lasagne base.

Then I was talking to someone else back home in Adelaide and I mentioned this random ragu recipe and they seconded (or is that thirded) the fact that it's a truly life-changing dish. Everywhere I looked, Karen Martini and her Roman Pork Sausage Ragu was waving hello!

So I just had to try it myself. And everything they said was true - I cooked it for the first 'family dinner' with my new housemate and it was so good we barely spoke - it was all 'mmmm, aaahhhh, yeeeessssss' kind of noises.

Do yourself a favour and get on board. You will never make a normal spaghetti bolognaise ever again. And you will have a newfound respect for the humble sausage!

Hot tip: Watch the video on Karen's website here. I was a bit confused about the whole 'crumble the meat' thing but she makes it look so easy.

And a confession - I didn't buy my sausages from the butcher like she recommends. I bought Coles 'pork, apple and cider' sausages then realised I needed more so topped up with Woolies' 'Italian beef, pork, red wine and fennel sausages'. They worked a TREAT. Oh, and I couldn't find thick-cut pancetta so I used a wedge of smoked pork. Same same but different?! Don't be afraid to experiment.

Ingredients
750 grams pork and fennel sausages
150 grams thick-cut pancetta, diced
2 brown onions, peeled and diced
6 cloves garlic, peeled and finely chopped
1 medium carrot, diced
3 celery stalks, finely sliced
2 bay leaves
1/2 teaspoon dried chilli flakes
1/2 tablespoon fennel seeds
2 tablespoons tomato paste
400 ml red wine
600 ml chicken stock
400 grams tinned crushed tomatoes
3 sprigs rosemary
2 sprigs oregano
salt and pepper
60 ml extra virgin olive oil
100 grams pasta per person, such as pappardelle

Method
Remove the skins from the sausages and crumble the meat. Discard the skins. Heat a heavy-based pot on medium heat, then add the sausage meat and pancetta. Fry until the sausage meat is golden brown, stirring every few minutes. Don’t worry if you get some sticky, crunchy bits – it’s all flavour.
Add the onion, garlic, carrot, celery, bay leaves, dried chilli and fennel seeds. Stir in well. The vegetables will sweat a little and ease all the crusty, caramelised pieces from the bottom of the pot.
Continue to cook gently for 15 minutes, stirring every few minutes, until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelised. Add the tomato paste and red wine and bring to a simmer. Add the stock, tinned tomatoes, rosemary and oregano and continue to simmer for about 45 minutes on low heat, until you have a thick, intense sauce consistency.
Cook the pasta according to packet instructions.
When cooked, season the ragu carefully (the sausages will already be salted), then add the olive oil and the cooked pasta. Bring the pot to the table.

On the hunt

Thank you Leo, yes I do.

And so do all my single lady friends* who are still holding out for that guy.

Instead of crashing on the couch in front of Offspring tonight, we're interviewing for new housemates. It's exhausting. I think we're up to about the 20th candidate. Where are all the awesome people!?

Between that and dating, I feel like all I do is talk about myself and ask the same questions! Favourite one is 'What are your social habits?' It's a tricky question to answer - you don't want to sound like a party animal, but you don't want to sound like a stay at home nerd.

Wish us luck!

I'm looking at you Alice, Phoebe, Kimberlee and Em xx

SA Grateful

I might have caved to social pressures and packed my bags for the big lights of Melbourne, but I will always be a fiercely proud South Aussie at heart.

So much makes this SA Great (oh how I wish they'd kept that brand instead of Advantage SA) and food and wine tops the list for me.

Menz is a firm favourite of mine and I especially love their commitment to the community and local charities. So I was especially chuffed to see them up in lights amongst some serious national heavy hitters today when I received my regular marketing industry newsletter this afternoon.

Menz has created what is believed to be Australia's largest mural made entirely of lollies.

Doesn't it look great!? I'm yet to identify all the iconic SA landmarks hidden throughout the thousands of sweets but so far have spotted the Malls Balls . . . anyone have any other ideas?!

Then this morning, my parochial fires were burning for Kochie's South Australian food segment on Sunrise. Farmers Union Iced Coffee, Haighs, Maggie Beer, Penfolds wine . . . so so so good!

O so good

She can do no wrong.

Love Olivia's take on the bridal gown. Okay, so it's not what I'd go for, but I love it all the same. The touch of blue, the luxe fabrics, the perfect pony. Oh, and the gorgeous handbag in hubby Johannes Huebl.

Nailed it, O.

When Love Comes to Town

Are you loving When Love Comes to Town as much as me?

Okay, so it's a bit cringeworthy but good on those girls! I don't have the guts to do it . . . a friend of mine actually nominated me for the show and the producers called her up . . . but nothing ever eventuated.

I was also in the running for another reality tv show just recently - I had a screen test and everything - but the truth is, I don't want to be on reality TV. I just want to find a bloke!

So I got the shock of my life when I saw an ex-boyfriend of mine's best mate on the ad for When Love Comes to Town.

Alfy, you could've saved us both the trouble (and years of searching!) and just given Josh my number!

Who is your favourite country bloke? Mum has a soft spot for Tom. I don't think I would've got off the bus just yet . . .

Lemon

TGIF friends!

It's been a good week, and it's going to be a great weekend.

Taking inspiration from one of my favourite TV characters Lemon Breeland and am going to reeeelax this weekend. I might get a manicure and sleep in and watch some catch up TV. I might even do some blogging - shock horror!

On the more active side, I'm also taking part in the Field of Women on the MCG on Saturday, and running the Mother's Day Classic with the fabulous and inspirational Bree. That girl can run. And I kind of 'joggle'. So it's going to be interesting. I've never run 8km in my life #whatwasithinkingsigningup?

Luckily I have my new iPhone arm band so I can look the part on Sunday. And I have some hot pink shorts I might pull out. Or not. Let's not scare the other runners. Stick with black Kate. Black is safe, black is slimming. Hot pink earrings will be enough.

I have also just received the gorgeous Adore book (the birthday celebrations continue!) from my friend Kelly and it's sensational, can't wait to flick through the colour on the weekend. Looking forward to the launch party on Thursday! Then we're all signed up for the Adore Shopping Tour next weekend, can't wait!

Wish me luck on my run!

Wombat stew

Ob. Sessed.

Love these kids.

And I'm also loving Sunrise's Sophie Hull. Isn't she gorgeous? She's following the Royals around for Channel 7 and has so much style and spunk herself. And am I the only one that thinks she looks a little like the Duchess? I think she's great. Love me some 'real' TV personalities - she and Sam Armytage rock my news world*.

*Cue the haters. I know Sunrise is no ABC 24 hour news, but I like it. It's entertaining and light hearted and I still know more about current affairs than everyone in my office each morning. And while I'm at it, I also watch The Project. So there.

Putting the Rad into Radelaide

Adelaide's got its cool on.

And I love it!
What do you think of the new TVC produced by kwp!? It is a lovely new chapter in the South Australian story of late and I love what they've done with it.

There are going to be the haters, the people who don't recognise the Adelaide they've grown up in. They've cut me down before on this very blog.

But that's not who this campaign is for.

We're trying to attract tourists, visitors, new people, adventurers, foodies, explorers, internationals, sceptics, SA haters and investors.

But let's be brave, take risks and stand out from the pack.

This is different. And different is not wrong. It's just different.

** Editor's note: I showed my housemate this ad tonight and she thought it was terrible. Had no idea what it was promoting. Interesting. I'm looking forward to hearing what others think. Stepping away from my 'Adelaide can do no wrong' bias, it does look quite European or something. Maybe an ad for a technology company? Maybe I love the edginess of the ad rather than the message. I will stay tuned for the backlash . . .

Whole lotta love

Where have I been hiding?

Twilight fan or not. Rob Pattinson is hot in this. Hot, ladies.

On your toes

I'm not much of a Dancing with the Stars fan anymore.

Until I saw that Adam Garcia is on the judging  panel this year.

He is so charming, totally swoon worthy.

Remember this little number he did with Kylie a few years back?

Awesome!

Might be enough to have me tuning in again this year. Oh, and Edwina from Sunrise. She's just gorgeous!

Back in the game

I'm back . . . and so is Ja'mie.

Whoop whoop!

Recipe to Riches

Australian TV is doing me proud lately and I'm eagerly anticipating the next Channel 10 reality TV show 'Recipe to Riches'.

I think it's the frustrated foodie in me - someone who knows what they like but can't articulate it or work out how to foster this passion and turn it into a career.

Have you seen the previews for the show? It's been done in Canada before, I think but I'm really excited about the local slant and the marketing ideas behind successful FMCG products.

Good on these punters for giving it a go. It'd be such a 'pinch yourself' moment to see your hairbrain idea for a supermarket product on the local Woolies shelf.

Check out the Recipe to Riches facebook page for some great example of brands we've come to know and love through their creative approach to advertising.

And I'm looking forward to getting to know Carolyn Creswell of Carman's fame a little better on our TV screens. Her story is wonderful, she's so inspiring and just a normal Mum with a passion for what she does. And she's always smiling - a big, warm genuine smile.

Stay tuned to the Ten website for more details . . .

Looking for some Wonder

So yes, I've been AWOL.

There's a lot going on. And I'm overwhelmed and not my usual self.

But I'll find my groove again soon.

And this show gives reason to smile.

Happiness over on Ten . . . I'm excited.

Good on you, Australian TV!

xx

Aussie drama excels once again

New TV show to sink your teeth into, people!

If Secret Life of Us was for the early 20s, and Love My Way for late 20s, early 30s, then The Time of Our Lives is for our mid 30s (NB. I'm not in that age bracket yet, but can still appreciate it!).

And it's brilliant! Common thread here. . .  the fabulous Claudia Karvan.

It's an all star cast, based in Melbourne and I've just watched three episodes of it on iview back to back (don't judge - I've got a cold and am holed up in bed with only one channel on my new TV so am glued to the laptop).

Get on it!

Barossa. Be Consumed.

So, I'm sitting on the couch watching The Americans with my new housemate and we were rendered speechless when a new tv ad came on.

It was stunning. Beyond gorgeous. Great music, breathtaking scenery, and a little bit edgy. Reminds me of the True Blood opening credits (but way cooler). We were lost for words. I pitched in with a 'Daylesford, maybe?' But my Vic housemate surprised me with a 'definitely South Australian'

I thought he was taking the piss, knowing how fiercely parochial I am.

But no, apparently we're known for great ads. Remember the brilliant Kangaroo Island campaign?

Well, I got all warm and fuzzy when I saw the end frame. None other than the Barossa. Brilliant!

Check it out ...

Good work SATC. Snaps to you.

Sprung

On the back of Asher Keddie's win at last night's Logies, I've gone all Offspring mad again.

I just love that show and can't wait to stalk to the locations in Melbourne.

Have you seen the preview for the new season?

What to expect when Nina's expecting . . .

Looks gold as usual!

And didn't Asher look beautiful last night?

Friday Night Lights

This long weekend has been the perfect excuse to indulge in some couchtime.

Mad March is taking its toll on me - I haven't had so many big nights since my uni days!

So I've taken to 'recovering' under the fan on the couch these past few days and have become obsessed with yet another American TV series.

This one is a bit more deep than Hart of Dixie - it's critically acclaimed and received rave reviews in the US.

Friday Night Lights is awesome. It's got everything - romance, sport, teenage angst. Love. It.

I'm halfway through the first season - there are five seasons all up and I'm champing at the bit to get through them all.

And the best bit? George Tucker from Hart of Dixie is in it - he's star Quarterback Jason Street and he's just as cute. And I'm smitten with Coach Taylor. His wife is just gorgeous too.

So many likable characters.

And it's sooooo American. We don't have anything like it in Australia. It must be crazy being a teenager in Texas, how I would've loved to do a high school exchange back in the day!

Clear Eyes. Full Heart. Can't Lose.

Bluebells are ringing

The best (only) highlight of being sick is having lots of time up your sleeve to lie on the couch and catch up on some TV.

I have fallen back in love with Hart of Dixie - at last count I'd watched 7 episodes. In a row.

And I'm completely in love with Lemon Breeland. Her wardrobe is TDF. I mean, I couldn't get away with it in little old Rads but she's perfectly at home in Bluebell, Alabama. Sounds like my kind of town, somewhere I could set up my dream little tea shop. A place where manners and tradition count for something, iced tea flows freely and the weather's always hot!

Zoe Hart is pretty cute too. And that George Tucker? Man of my dreams!

What TV series have you rediscovered?

In the Abbey

Do you just LOVE Downton Abbey as much as me?

Mum got the third season disc set for Christmas and we watched five episodes back to back on Boxing Day.

It's got everything - English class, stunning fashion, American confidence (hello Shirley MacLaine!), love, loss and beautiful sceneries.

Be warned - have the tissues at the ready!
