We are family

Thought you might be interested in a family pic from my Granny and Grandpa's 60th wedding anniversary lunch. Or not. But I'm a sentimental old thing and I love these special times.

We had a beautiful meal at Jolley's Boathouse which was just the perfect venue - it is on the river which excited the kids to no end. Ruby and Zane loved feeding the pelicans and swans out on the banks of the Torrens.

And we overlooked Great Grandpa's bridge - Granny's father was the engineer for this bridge in the photo above. It's the main bridge across the River Torrens that connects North Adelaide to the CBD. We're all a little bit proud of it so it was lovely for it to be a part of our day.

Grandpa dressed to impress and Granny looked lovely in her pearls. My dress was uber comfy and the lipstick lasted a treat.

Speaking of lipsticks, I've just discovered a fab new range of lippies but will go into that another time.

It was so lovely to have this family time. And boy oh boy, was the food delicious. A seriously good feed, one of the best I've had in ages - and that includes dining out in Melbourne. We ate and drank like kings - including a bottle of Rockford Basket Press which was a very nice touch (thanks Dad).

And then my weekend finished off with a cup of tea and Anzac biscuit at Granny and Grandpa's before flying back to Melbourne - begrudgingly, I might add. I didn't want to let go of my Mum when she hugged me at the airport. I thought it was supposed to get easier after two years!?

Thank goodness for FaceTime.

Happy birthday Mum!

Happiest of birthdays to this biddy today.

Wish we were celebrating in New York or somewhere special this year. But no, instead I'm sitting at my desk in cold Melbourne and you're cleaning up Dougall's vomit from the living room floor.

Oh the glamour!

Have a lovely day Mum. You're the best xx

Shine bright like a diamond

I'm flying home (again) tonight for a long weekend in the Rads.

It's my Grandparents' 60th wedding anniversary. What a milestone! Diamonds apparently.

They are such a gorgeous couple, they call each other 'Darl' and are chalk and cheese. But their dynamic works.

Here they are at Christmas two years ago with my brother, his wife and the ever divine Ruby.

And here they are at my second cousin's wedding (my first of seven bridesmaid duties!) a few years ago.

Gosh, I was skinny*! And showing a lot more cleavage than probably appropriate for a church wedding!

I'm the only granddaughter and am very close with my Granny. We went to the same school, she bought me my first piano, we share a love of pearls and the Royal Family. She also introduced me to Tiffany & Co and inspired my love of tea sets. Granny is a great cook and always does the hosting, yet Grandpa does the nightly meals and takes such pleasure in trying new things. I often chat to him on the phone (when Granny forces the handset on to him), and we talk about what cookbooks he's reading and what new ingredients he's discovered. I think he experimented with quinoa before I did! He did the London thing when he was a young man and I was so proud to follow in his footsteps all those years later when I had my two years in London.

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of sleepovers at Granny and Grandpas. It feels like we spent every weekend at their place - my brother and I had a bed each in the spare room and we'd wake to smells of egg and bacon frying in the kitchen. So spoilt!

It's so hard being away from home - you really notice how much they're ageing when you don't see them for months at a time. But they're both still sharp as a tack and always on top of what I'm up to. They're always asking after my friends and Granny has a little notepad where she writes down what I'm up to at work so she can tell her friends at their regular embroidery catch ups.

They have three great grandchildren and have the energy to entertain them and keep them happy - they delight in showing them their chooks or the wooden toys we used to play with as children. It's truly special times.

The pic above is from their anniversary dinner at my parents' house. I couldn't make it, so we're having a lovely Sunday lunch at a restaurant this weekend. I am wearing a new silk dress and a new shade of lippy for the occasion. I can't wait.

I just hope I inherit Granny's youthful skin and joie de vivre as I grow old gracefully.

Cherish your grandparents and make time for them regularly. The simple act of a phone call or unexpected knock on the door can really make their day.

Pop the kettle on Granny, I'm nearly home!

*Skinny, relative to my normal weight that is, not the rest of the world!

Gifted

A quick debrief on my Christmas haul (because we all loved my annual wish list, oui?!) ...

I was a very good girl and Father Christmas was uber kind.

Look what he left under the tree!

Nespresso, Kate spade and my girl Sam. Nailed it, big man!

I was ridiculously spoiled by friends and fam and won't go into detail with a list of gifts but more than anything, above and beyond the material possessions, I'm very grateful for the time everyone gave me over Christmas - time with my niece and nephew, time with my grandparents, time with my friends and their new bubs, time with my pregnant gal pals, time with old workmates, time with my parentals, time with my godchildren and time with the bride. This is what I'll cherish from my two weeks home.

That, and the coffee ;)

I hope you all had lovely holidays and took time out to spend with loved ones.

xx

Happy house

I'm a bit of a Mother Hen in my sharehouse and like to keep my housemates well fed. I just love cooking and feeding people and sharing a big feast with friends.

Christmas is a great excuse to get people together for a beautiful celebratory meal but this time . . . I put my foot down and insisted my housemates pitch in. Okay, so I was a bit of a control freak and wrote the menu and told them what they had to buy/contribute, but it all worked out brilliantly. Some couples bought and made their own dishes while others gave me the ingredients and I cooked it up on their behalf. Worked for me!

One couple did nibbles and I had to laugh - my actual housemate did nothing but her boyfriend totally took charge of the situation. His spread was quite impressive.

Then it was the main deal and my contribution - the turkey.

I did a Donna Hay recipe and it was brilliant. So so so tender and so easy and delicious. I can't believe how moist it was - I've always heard how easy it is to dry out a turkey breast, but this was perfection.

I ordered the turkey breast from the poultry man at the South Melbourne Markets. It was about 2kg for $53 and it would have served about 10 people I reckon. Recipe from here.

prosciutto-wrapped turkey
  • 100g butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons finely grated lemon rind
  • 1 tablespoon sage leaves, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • sea salt and cracked black pepper
  • 2kg turkey breast fillet, skin on
  • olive oil, for brushing
  • sea salt and cracked black pepper
  • 15 slices prosciutto

Then for sides I allocated one couple to two salads. It was really nice to have everyone get their hands dirty and feel proud about their contribution.

This Ottolenghi one was a real winner. And so so so easy. Recipe from here.

We cheated and just put the beans in a bowl and poured boiling water over them, left them for a while then added the snow peas towards the end until ever so slightly cooked, then ran cold water over them. I really like my greens crunchy and this meant the team could stay out of the kitchen. Much better!

Green bean, snow pea and hazelnut salad
You can really play with this salad, the beans make for a perfect base from which to improvise. You could add pomegranate seeds, goats cheese and/or pinenuts. Or you could replace the mange tout with chickpeas or white beans, and chop the green beans into segments to make it a little bulkier.
Ingredients
300g (one std pack) of fine green beans
150g (one std pack) of mange tout
50g hazelnuts
15g chives
1 orange
1 tblsp sesame oil
1 tblsp extra virgin olive oil
Black pepper
Heat the oven to about 150 oC.
Fill as big a pan as possible with water for the beans and mange tout. The more space you give them, the more they retain their vivid green colouring. I use a big old casserole pot. Bring the water to the boil.
While it’s heating up, trim and wash the beans and mange tout, keeping them separate. When the water is bubbling merrily away drop the beans in and cook for 4 minutes. Take them out, plonk them in a colander and run under plenty of cold water to stop them cooking further.
Bring the water back to the boil and drop the mange tout in and cook them for no more than a minute. Then drain them into a colander and run under cold water. Dry the beans and the mange tout with some paper towels and put in a large salad bowl.
Put the hazelnuts into the oven and roast for about 7 minutes. Remove and squeeze the skins off – they should mostly crumble away. It doesn’t matter if some bits are left on. Roughly chop with a big, very sharp knife, You don’t want them too finely chopped, there should be plenty of halves, even the odd whole hazelnut left.
Wash the orange and peel away the zest in strips, trying to minimise the amount of white pith you take with it. Slice the strips as finely as possible. Slice the chives in to 1cm lengths.
Add the hazelnuts, orange zest and chives, grind over some black pepper to the beans and toss until all mixed up. Add the sesame (or walnut, hazelnut, pecan or any other nut oil you might have) and olive oils and toss some more.
Serve at room temperature.

The next salad was one I've featured before - it's so Christmasy with those gorgeous gems of pomegranate.

The potatoes were the stand out of the night. Apparently. They got all the attention. Such a simple thing but so hard to get right. And we nailed it (I still think my turkey was the shining light of the evening!).

They were a Gordon Ramsay recipe without all the trimmings - we didn't do the turmeric rub that's recommended, just simple salt and pepper and olive oil. The key is the hot oil on the tray, and roughing up the potatoes after boiling. And turning them during the cooking stage.

It's so worth the effort.

Recipe here - but ignore the chilli and turmeric. Unless you want to be a bit adventurous.

Dessert was an age old favourite - sticky date pudding. I did my Mum's sworn winner - the Masterchef recipe that I featured a few years ago. I cooked it in a spring form tin the night before then just heated it up after main course. Served with vanilla icecream.

The praline was a winner. I doubled the recipe. Boom.

And I tell you what, I could eat that butterscotch sauce 'til the cows come home.

I have raved about the whole night non-stop so Mum has said I have to roll it out again for Christmas Day at home. Suits me just fine, I've had the dress rehearsal, I'm ready for the real deal now! We're currently sitting on the couch watching Maggie Beer's Christmas special and flicking through Christmas cookbooks looking for 'entree' inspiration. Christmas lunch deserves a more decadent starter than just nibbles, so we're tossing up different versions of prawn cocktails. So retro. So cool.

I'll be sure to post about our feast soon!

It's good to be home x

For Big John

Although I won't be seeing my Dad on Father's Day this year, I know he'll still be as happy as a pig in mud as Port is playing in an Elimination Final at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.

A win over Richmond will mean so much more than any bottle of wine, coffee table book or piece of golfing equipment that I could give!

Happy Father's Day for Sunday, Big John.

How do you celebrate Father's Day?

I love Dove's approach to Dads this year - check out their video below. It's a gorgeous celebration of the men in our lives.

Rads

Flying home tomorrow peeps, can't wait!
So much to celebrate - my nephew's first birthday, one of my dearest friend's 31st birthdays and of course the Port v Bulldogs game at Adelaide Oval. So excited to catch some footy while I'm home, I've heard brilliant things about the ground.

There'll be lots of eating and drinking and cuddles with Dougall (the ferocious dog).

Bring it xx

Hashtag Christmas

Some might call my recent blog posts lazy.

Yes, I am reposting some viral videos that are doing the social media rounds, but they're just so funny and worth sharing.

And let's be honest, we're all lazy when it comes to reading text heavy blog posts at this time of year. Our eyes hurt. Our heads hurt. We're over it.

So a video sometimes is just what the doctor ordered.

Feast your eyes on this viral video.

Only in America . . .

A day to remember

I'm well on my way to planning THE ultimate day in New York in celebration of my 30th birthday.

It starts with breakfast at Pastis. Booked.

Then I think we'll head to SoHo for a spot of shopping and some NY 'downtime' browsing the streets.

We'll have lunch at Dean & DeLuca (Mum appreciates my obsession with the place after growing up with Felicity) and then I'll spoil myself with a Kate Spade bag that I've wanted for years.

The afternoon could do with a little more activity (suggestions, people?). . . but not too much because then we're booked in to Balthazar for dinner. I am SO excited. Bless Mum, she stayed up late last night to ring internationally and book us in - they only open reservations 30 days before each date so we had to watch our calendars carefully.

It's going to be a day to remember, that's for sure!

Any other suggestions to help ring in this milestone? Perhaps somewhere for a nightcap after dinner? Or pre-dinner drink even?

Framed!

Can you believe the first week of February is dead and buried already? I feel sick about it!

Where does time go?

Have been meaning to put up pics of my Christmas Day for ages - remember the photo booth props I printed out? Well they were a hit with the fam, especially my nearly two year old niece, Ruby.

Tis the season!

I re-booted my New Year on Friday 1 February and I'll tell you what, it's going well so far!

How are your New Year's Resolutions coming along?

Another year down

Happiest of happy birthdays to my little brother Sam

He's a great husband, father and pretty mean cook.

Wishing you an awesome day and looking forward to catching up tonight for the traditional birthday dinner

PS. Do I have the world's cutest niece, or what!?

Say cheese!

Looking to add some fun to your Christmas Day?

Why not capture the magic of the day with a DIY photo booth?

Great ideas from Oh Happy Day here . . . and the free printable templates are even included!

We'll be sillying it up at my folks' place this year, can't wait to get my merry on and rope the oldies into some pics! I've also got a gorgeous big gold empty picture frame that will really top it off.

Stay tuned for the end results!

Christmas to the Max

Christmas came early on last night with a lovely dinner celebration at the local pub with my 'other' family.

Kelly and Mark treated me to dinner at the pub with their kids (Zara and Max my Godson) and totally spoilt me with beautiful gifts. I was thrilled to get my hot little hands on a print copy of fete press and the most fabulous neon nail polish appropriately named Notting Hill Gate (Kelly and I both lived in London and share a special bond over all things English)

As if that wasn't enough, I took home a goody bag of fresh tomatoes and basil from their veggie patch plus a carton of eggs from the farm and a pint of mint sauce that Mark whipped up on the spot.

Oh, and did I mention the Rudolph biccies and jar of lemon curd they also presented me with?

Yep, Christmas certainly came early!

After dinner we tied red bows around the tree on the footpath and also wrapped the front gate in a big bow. Gorgeous! Poor Kelly was trying to get Zara in her PJs ready for bed but we kind of got distracted . . .

PS. How cute is Kelly's Christmas arrangement of crab apples care of Austin Bloom?

Cake to your heart's content

I can't take a trick when it comes to my health lately. I'm like a two year old at childcare, I pick up all sorts of bugs.

So it hasn't been a good week ... but then there was cake and order was restored to the world.

Dotty for the races

So I've been slack on the blogging front but with Melbourne Cup tomorrow, I thought I'd better share with you my Spring Carnival outfit.

I'm so thrilled with how my hat turned out! I've never had so many comments on my outfit before, I said to someone I felt like Miranda Kerr . . . without the body! Heather Clark of Studio Hats was the creative force behind it, she's brilliant.

Some may say I'm breaking all sorts of protocol by recycling my hat time and time again (as of tomorrow, I would've worn it four times in three weeks) but I've changed my dress each time and love how the price per wear is looking much nicer each time!

So here it is . . .

And this was with Jourdanne (the girl behind my freezer full of meat!) at our friend Jo's 30th birthday at Caulfield Cup Day at Morphettville . . .

And most recently at Cox Plate with my Mum and Dad at Moonee Valley.

It would've been perfect at Derby Day on the weekend.

And yes, I'll be wearing it again tomorrow at Morphettville for Melbourne Cup Day.

What's your Cup Day inspiration? Are you embracing neon or going more traditional this year?

Tu tu cute

Aren't these pics just tu tu cute?!

Collette Dinnigan is the latest designer to collaborate with Target to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Australian Ballet.

When can we get Ruby into ballet, Mum? Let's hope she doesn't take after her aunty . . .

Lost in Canola

Please indulge me while I have a proud Godmother moment.

Isn't Max just the cutest little thing? Happiest kid on the planet, I tell you!

Mark and Zara look pretty stoked too.

Kelly was behind the lens for these pics . . . doesn't the canola make a gorgeous backdrop? I won't embarrass Mark by revealing his age . . . but will say he was back home for the weekend celebrating his 20 year school reunion.

Whoops. Secret's out.

Make sure you get in the shot next time, Kelly!

PS. Did you find me a farmer while you were out there?

Taken

Okay, I admit it.

I was watching X Factor tonight.

Only because there was nothing else on and I am ever so slightly intrigued by a couple of those young girls' voices. Bella, is it? Wow, she's a bit talented isn't she!?

Plus, GCB follows it and I LOVE those girls. So wrong, but so right.

Anyway, I was so excited to see the trailer for the sequel to one of my favourite movies during X Factor - Taken.

Have you seen it? If you haven't, you must hire it.

Just don't watch it before you let your daughter go overseas on her own.

Lucky for me, Mum and Dad watched it after I'd returned home safely from two years abroad. Dad said he would seriously have to reconsider letting me trapse across the globe after the horrors of that film.

Is it time to tell him about my planned USA adventures next year?

I can't wait to see this at the movies . . .

By any other name

I was so excited to see that one of the sailing events in the Olympics is called the Elliott something-or-other (obviously I'm not a details girl!).

Great name, if I do say so myself!

Birthday beers

Happy birthday Big John {aka Dad}

Can you believe this was us nearly seven years ago?

With The Ashes. Yep. Gush. One of the best days of my life.

Tour of Lords with Dad in the morning, High Tea at The Ritz with Mum in the afternoon.

What's even harder to believe is it's the big 6-0 next year, old man!

Suffice to say, you're a bit greyer (and dare I say portlier!) than you were in this pic!

xo
